Localisation of Linux

Organization :
    National Centre for Software Technology, Bombay

Objective of the Project :
    Broad :
         Enable wide use of Indian Language computing applications through freeware And open platforms and system.
   Immediate :
         Localize suitable components within the Linux Operating system to enable applications to create, edit and display content in Hindi in phase I and other Indian Languages in phase II.

Speech Synthesis System

Organization :
         Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, Pilani (Rajasthan)

Objectives of the project :
         The specific objectives of the project are listed below :-

To carry out micro-level acoustic-phonetic analysis of Hindi consonant clusters and to make rules for their synthesis.
To carry out detailed analysis of Hindi sentences and to make rules for incorporation of pitch and stress variations.
To make durational rules for syllables/words in continuous speech.
To make improvements in the quality of basic database of the CV and VC synthetic syllables by making optimum changes in the parametric values.
To develop windows based customized Hindi text editor and to integrate it with Hindi text to speech synthesis system.
Psycho-acoustic tests for perception of synthetic speech and objective tests based on comparison of spectograms and spectral details will be conducted to evaluate the intelligibility and quality performance of the speech.
To develop suitable interface software compatible with above-mentioned limited text editor so that, it can be used by blinds.
To make necessary changes in text to speech conversion software and port it from DOS platform to Windows platform.
To deliver improved quality unlimited vocabulary text to speech conversion system for Hindi working in Windows 98 on a Pentium computer.
CEERI in collaboration with MIT will conduct workshop on speech synthesis technology for its adoption/development in other Indian languages and its utilization.
To develop interfaces for reading Hindi text documents/e-mails saved in ISCII format.
To explore the possibility of integrating Hindi TTS with OCR technology is made available to CEERI by CDAC or any other institution, through MIT.


Multilingual Dictionaries

Bharat Bhasha Kosh

SAARC Countries Language Dictionary

UN Seven Language Dictionary

Development of Web-based learning systems in Indian Languages

Establishnt of a testing & Evaluation facility for Natural Language software

Objective of the Project :
To establish a testing & Evaluation facility for Natural Language software where products, which have resulted from completed projects, can be evaluated. Depending upon the resources and need, adaptation and/or porting exercises may also be undertaken.
Investigators of Indian Scriptures can be given advice/guidance on the issues of choice of hardware and software for maximizing usefulness of software under development.
Based on its experience the Centre may prepare, in other year or so, recommendations for minimum and typical hardware and support software such as fonts, which can be useful to those talking up projects within the following one or two years.

Operationalization of Human-aided Machine Translation Systems for Translation of News Summaries from English to Hindi.

The projects aim at creating operational system for Human-aided machine translation of English stories to Hindi. It will build upon the prototype system " Matra" developed under a earlier TDIL project for translation of English news stories to Hindi. The MAT system will take English news stories from a wire service agency such as PTI & UNI, will be simplified and translated, using human intervention as appropriate and the edited by a human, and then made available either as a Hindi news summary service, or as web page on the internet.
  
Integrated Machine Aided Translation System from English to Hindi.

The Specific objectives of the project are listed below :

IIT Kanpur has developed ANGLABHARTI technology for Machine Aided Translation from English to Indian Languages and an English to Hindi translation system named AnglaHindi has been developed out of the TDIL funded project based on Anglabharti technology. In this project it is proposed to further refine and augment AnglaHindi and integrate the system with OCR and Speech output. The system will be augmented with a dictionary hierarchy in which the user may work in the general domain or any specific domain for which the information exists in the dictionary hierarchy. It will have an user-friendly interface (for further expanding the dictionary and domain) and (optional) post-editing facility. The system will be able to handle parenthesized items, quoted items, dates, currencies, special characters and varying formats within the text.

Design and Development of TDIL Web Server

The Specific objectives of the project are listed below :

Developnet of Content Creation Center and use the existing server for providing the information to the citizen of India. The said server will work along with a communication/application server in tandem. The data server will be on a Linux platform with X-Windows for control purpose. The communication server will work on NT platform and will accept queries from internet.
Communication server as a broadcast message will answer the first query. It will also handle generic mail. The second type of query will have to be handled by CGI pearl protocol of communication, which will have to be developed and is always application specific. The third type of query is meant for data server to communicate to the user through COM server, using advance CGI Pearl/Java Script.
To develop a protocol with CGI & Pearl for handling queries falling on the server.
 
Design & Development of on-line Hindi Vishwakosh.
