Resource Centers of TDIL
The Technology Development
for Indian Languages (TDIL) Programme of the Ministry
of Information Technology (MIT, through its R&D funding
mechanism, has established the feasilibity of mass penetration
of computers to people of India in their local languages.
However it was felt that the following promotional efforts
need to be done to further this cause.
 |
Create awareness around the country about the initiatives being taken in this direction and the solutions already available for their use. Also provide consultancy for applying existing solutions to their problems. |
 |
Consolidation and integration of Language technologies to provide solutions. |
 |
Raise linguistic support from Local Language experts, which is a vital component in this programme. |
 |
Mobilize State Governments for investing into R&D for their respective languages jointly with TDIL programme for devising complete solutions. |
|
The Working Group for TDIL had discussions on the above and suggested the idea of setting up Resource Centres for each of the constitutionally recognized Indian Languages, and also for building up interface tools to facilitate information exchange between certain Foreign Languages and Indian Languages. |
| With these recommendations, MIT has set up thirteen Resource Centres for Indian Language Technology Solutions in March 2000 at various educational institutes and R&D organizations with the following major objectives. |
 |
To improve the quality of life of people of India by enabling to use Information Technology through Indian Languages.. |
 |
To develop new products and services for processing information in Indian Languages. |
 |
To promote content creation efforts in Indian Languages for better dissemination of information among the Indian masses |
 |
To facilitate Research in technology areas such as Machine Translation (MT), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Speech Recognition in Indian Languages that leads to product development. |
In addition to these core activities each Resource Centre is
also associated with its own center specific product
driven R&D efforts in the technology area of their
interest and strength.
